  1. When we arrived at Beech Springs, I was assaulted by a sickening wave of nostalgia. I just barely managed to blockade my tear ducts and hold back the oncoming flood that threatened to burst forth from my eyes. I was pushed to my limit when I spotted one of my favorite teachers from the familiar setting. It was Mrs. Rash, my former music teacher. The meeting was brief, and soon I was ushered into the old cafetorium and told to take a seat with my trusty partner Jackson Crow. We waited as our soon-to-be proteges marched into the public dining room, and it wasn't but two minutes before we met Samuel and Kendal. Sammy was talkative and open, but Kendal took a bit of coaxing. We all talked about our favorite video games, because that's just what boys do. Kendal slowly opened up to us and we ended up having an amazing day. Those kids brightened up my week, and I look forward to seeing them again.

    1. So wonderful - glad you enjoyed the experience. I'm glad you got to see Mrs. Rash - teachers love to see former students! You guys are also making those kids days even if you don't realize it. :)

  2. I didn't have very high hopes for the trip at first because I struggle with teaching younger people, but it actually went very well. The guys in my group were awesome and ready to learn. Me and my partner Josiah are very happy to see the kids at beech springs and we hope to be a positive influence on them.

    1. I'm sure you will be a positive influence. Remember it's not really about teaching, just being there, interacting, and being a "friend." I think both you and your mentees will get a lot out of it. :)

  3. I felt that my experience at Beech Springs was one that i will never forget. The children were amazing and i feel privileged to have been able to work in close proximity with such a talented and well-rounded group of kids. I made a new friend on this diminutive adventure....her name was Andrea and she reminded me of my little sister. She was polite and intelligent aswell as talkative. I really hope that we make our positions as "buddies" over at Beech Springs a permanent fixation in our weekly schedule.

    1. I'm so glad you liked it. Having a younger sister probably helped you relate to her even better. We will continue to go as much as possible and I hope you get to know her even better. :)

    1. I'm sure he will open up to you. You are so outgoing it may have intimidated him a little at first. Maybe you could talk about something that interests him - maybe video games or sports. You could tell him about how you play football for the c-team. I bet he will think that is very cool. :)

  5. Friday was the first day my creative writing class went to Beech Springs Intermediate School and read to the special ed classes. We all created children's books with a partner and presented them to our reading buddies. Kristen and my buddy was Grace, she was in the sixth grade and reminded me that even if you are different on the inside you don't have to look different on the outside. I forgot we were seeing Special Ed kids and treated them like normal and as it turned out that's pretty much what they were.

    1. Very true. They also want to be treated like normal kids, some may not even realize they are special. Glad you enjoyed the experience.

  6. My first mentoring experience at Beech Springs was pretty awesome. The whole class was partnered with a reading buddy. We had to make our own children books for our buddies. I thought I was gonna be really nervous and shy around my book buddy. But surprisingly I did really well. I will never forget when Grace gave me a hug. It was so sweet. I cant wait until we go back. :D

  7. My first mentoring experience was okay. i don't think my kid got attached to me right away though. I was nervous to begin with and i didn't really want to go. I've changed my mind about it though. Now i can't wait to go back.

  8. My first mentoring experience was pretty lame . I didn't really like it and didn't want to go back or see the point of it . Since then I've changed my perspective on things and enjoy going to see Jonathan and Lavarus .

  9. Why was it lame? What made you change your mind? I'm glad you are getting more into it now. :)

  10. I really enjoyed my first day at Beech Springs. When we got there we went to the cafeteria and sat and waited for the kids to come.I noticed this little kid and I was like " Wow he looks like he doesn't belong in this class. But when he sat down and read, his reading wasn't good. His name was Jacob a little kid wearing a Cowboys jersey , and this hair just like Justin Bieber but black. Kelsey and I read them the book that we wrote called The earth is special to me . Jacob and Ariel really enjoyed it and wanted a copy so we printed them one. Time was flying by so we all said bye and left.

  11. On Friday the 28th, we went to go visit the sixth graders at Beech Springs Intermediate school. Over the past two weeks, we have been composing children's books with our partners. Our children's book was about food around the world, for we thought it would be an interesting book to capture the kid's attention. We had two Beech Buddies, both who were in special education classes. They eagerly read our book, to the point they asked us if they could read it themselves. Of course, we let them, and they were overjoyed. Then we filled out a sheet about each other, and I learned that one of my buddies enjoys texting. She says she can't get enough of it, because it's so fun. Afterwards, we took a picture, while one of our buddies earnestly held up our book to be photographed. It was fun, and I'm looking forward to our next visit to Beech Springs.
